Features - Psoriasis Winter Blues

With the weather turning cooler and the festive season upon us, does your Psoriasis worsen? What are the main factors influencing flare-ups?

The climate at this time of year brings in colder air and central heating dries the air which can aggravate the skin and develop into more of the dry, scaly, itchy red patches associated with Psoriasis. At this time of year the liberal use of moisturisers can help to prevent an outbreak and make already dry patches look and feel better. The key is to apply a lot of it and often.

It is also the season to stay in more and maybe spend more time on the sofa with a good book (and chocolate, in my case). As tempting as this is, we all need more exposure to fresh air and sunlight, which can be beneficial helping to keep flare-ups under control. I recommend getting wrapped-up warm and going on a revitalizing walk (healthier than the aforementioned chocolate).

Apart from the influence the climate has on Psoriasis, there is the possibility of stress triggering a deterioration of the condition. The Christmas festivities are not just fun and a reason to celebrate, but can also cause stress levels to rise. With the celebrations carrying on into the new year, there is a lot of potential stress to cope with. Relaxation and hypnosis can help to reduce stress levels.

Dietary changes may also play a part if your Psoriasis worsens. Certain foods may have an influence and the consumption of alcohol is reported to cause a number of patients’ flare-ups. With parties and Christmas dinners ahead of us it can prove difficult to avoid all the things we know are not so good for us.

Does your Psoriasis worsen this time of year? How do you get through this season and stay well? What are your tactics? I would like to start a thread in our forum and get as many of you as possible to share your tips of how to cope with climate, stress and Christmas dinner!
