What is reflexology?
Reflexology is a modern western complimentary therapy, which works on the feet and hands to induce deep relaxation. Reflexologists believe the feet to be a map of the whole body. All the glands, organs and body parts are represented as in the body. Even the inside curve of the foot corresponds with the natural curves of the spine. Reflexology is a gentle therapy, which encourages the body to restore and maintain its natural equilibrium and facilitate healing. Reflexology does not claim to diagnose or to cure.
Who can benefit form reflexology?
Reflexology is a "holistic" therapy, treating the person as a whole. The benefits that reflexology brings will be different for everyone. Reflexology is beneficial for those suffering form stress related disorders, including back pain, digestive disorders, headaches, sleep disorders and high blood pressure. Benefits have also been reported in the treatment of chronic and acute conditions affecting the body, mind and emotions.
What are the benefits of reflexology?
Reflexology reduces stress.
Stress cannot be avoided. If stress is not managed well our bodies function less effectively, making us more susceptible to illness and disease. Reflexology reduces stress by inducing a state of deep relaxation.
Reflexology improves circulation.
It is important for blood to flow freely throughout the body, in order that oxygen and nutrients can be delivered to the cells. Stress and tension can hinder the natural flow of blood throughout the body. By reducing stress, reflexology facilitates steady blood flow to and from the heart, and improves the flow of oxygenated blood to all of the cells.
Reflexology cleanses the body of impurities and toxins.
The feet are farthest away form the heart, where circulation tends to be slow. Gravity pulls toxins downwards, causing inorganic waste materials such as uric acid and calcium crystals to accumulate in the feet. Reflexology breaks up these deposits and improves circulation to the feet. The result is the prompt removal and elimination of toxins and waste from the body.
Reflexology revitalises energy.
Energy is very personal. It may be exciting, invigorating, calm or restful. However, energy flows and according to polarity theory should flow unimpeded between the negative and positive poles that every atom and cell contains.
Every part of the body is operated by messages carried along neural pathways. Such pathways carry information to and from the brain. The neural pathways are living tissue and electrical channels, and from time to time may become congested and nerve function impeded. The result is that organs and systems of the body function less effectively. Reflexology stimulates more than 7,000 nerves and encourages the opening of neural pathways, allowing the body to function more effectively.
Reflexology is preventative healthcare.
The body's immune system functions at its best when a person successfully manages stressful situations. The immune system also relies on the other bodily processes to maintain its own lines of defence. Reflexology restores the body's natural balance, providing optimum conditions to fight illness.
